Travel Methods: Safari

Originally started as a method of hunting big game, safaris are currently utilized to help visitors observe and photograph wildlife and nature. The Swahili word safari means journey, aptly summarizing the occasion; a safari is an overland journey for tourists and locals wanting to appreciate the nature and wildlife of a particular area.

Going on safari often brings up a particular destination: the African continent. With incredible opportunities in South Africa, Botswana, and other African safaris, visitors can visit some of the most beautiful scenery on Earth while glimpsing the Big Five: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo. Whether by truck, by horse, or by foot, African safaris offer the opportunity to see some of the most iconic safari animals in the world.

However, Safaris aren’t just for the African continent. Wherever there is interesting or unique wildlife, there is likely a safari tour waiting to bring you as close as possible. The Galapagos Islands, for example, are home to some of the world’s most unique flora and fauna. Safaris and cruises bring visitors close to strange creatures without disrupting their habitat. Similarly, South America has some incredible wildlife viewing opportunities, especially in Peru and along the Machu Picchu trail. If you are travelling to a destination for nature, a safari is a wonderful way to experience the area.

Let’s not forget Australia, the continent and country with some of the most biodiversity in the world. In fact, there are only seventeen ‘megadiversity’ countries, and they have extraordinarily high levels of biodiversity—Australia is one of those seventeen. Taking an Australian safari is an excellent way to see some of these amazing creatures and scenes.

If you’re considering taking a vacation to see wildlife, visit a particular geological site, or simply experience nature, a safari may be the best means of achieving your goal. Often, these tours are carefully planned and arranged; visitors pay a flat fee for the entire trip, and tickets, lodging, and meals are secured by the company itself. This hands-off form of travel is one of the best ways to get up close and personal with some of the world’s most interesting places. However, visitors can also schedule simple day trips in certain locations. The safari can be used to supplement your trip or as the exoskeleton for the vacation—the variability makes it an excellent choice for nearly every journey.
